Shoulder Impingement

Physical therapy for shoulder impingement at Total Body Rehab — evaluation-driven, one-on-one care in Trenton, serving all of Downriver.

Shoulder impingement describes irritation of the rotator cuff tendons and bursa as they pass through the narrow space under the shoulder blade's bony roof. Repetitive overhead work, weak cuff muscles, and poor shoulder-blade mechanics all narrow that space further.

Impingement responds extremely well to physical therapy — it's fundamentally a movement problem, and movement is what we fix.

Common signs & symptoms

How physical therapy helps

We restore the mechanics that create space: mobilizing a stiff thoracic spine and posterior shoulder capsule, retraining shoulder-blade positioning, and strengthening the rotator cuff so the ball stays centered in the socket. Hands-on work and dry needling settle the irritated tissue while the mechanics improve.

Frequently asked questions

Why does only part of the lifting motion hurt?

The painful arc is classic impingement — the tendon gets compressed most in the middle range of lifting. That pattern actually helps confirm the diagnosis.

Can I keep working out with impingement?

Usually yes, with modifications. We'll adjust your pressing and overhead work temporarily rather than stopping you completely, then build you back to full training.

How quickly does impingement improve?

Most patients notice meaningful change within 4–6 weeks of consistent rehab. Long-standing cases take longer, but the trajectory is usually clearly positive by then.
