Rotator Cuff Tears

Physical therapy for rotator cuff tears at Total Body Rehab — evaluation-driven, one-on-one care in Trenton, serving all of Downriver.

The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that stabilize and steer the shoulder. Tears range from small partial-thickness fraying to full-thickness ruptures — from either a specific injury or gradual wear over years.

Here's the encouraging part: many rotator cuff tears, even full-thickness ones, do well without surgery. Structured strengthening of the remaining cuff and surrounding muscles restores function for a large share of patients.

Common signs & symptoms

How physical therapy helps

We first calm the irritated tissue with manual therapy and activity modification, then progressively strengthen the intact cuff and shoulder-blade muscles to take over load. If you've had (or need) rotator cuff repair surgery, we provide protocol-driven post-surgical rehab in coordination with your surgeon.

Frequently asked questions

Does a torn rotator cuff always need surgery?

No. Many partial and even full-thickness tears regain strong, pain-free function with a proper strengthening program. Age, tear size, and your goals all factor in — we'll help you and your physician weigh it.

How long is rehab after rotator cuff surgery?

Typically 4–6 months to full function, following your surgeon's protocol: protection first, then gradual motion, then strengthening. We coordinate every phase with your surgical team.

Will the tear heal on its own?

Tendon tears don't usually knit back together, but that's not the goal — the goal is a strong, pain-free shoulder, which the surrounding muscles can deliver with the right training.
