Knee Injuries
Physical therapy for knee injuries at Total Body Rehab — evaluation-driven, one-on-one care in Trenton, serving all of Downriver.
Beyond the famous ACL, knees are injured in dozens of ways: MCL and LCL sprains, kneecap dislocations, cartilage injuries, and hard falls or collisions that leave a knee swollen and untrusted.
Whatever the structure, the rehab logic is consistent: restore motion, rebuild strength, retrain confidence — on a timeline matched to the tissue's healing.
Common signs & symptoms
- Swelling and stiffness after injury
- Pain along the inner or outer joint line
- Instability, buckling, or fear of giving way
- Loss of full bending or straightening
- Limping or guarding weeks after the injury
How physical therapy helps
Early treatment controls swelling and restores full straightening — the two best predictors of a good outcome. From there we rebuild quadriceps and hip strength progressively, retrain balance and landing, and return you to work or sport by objective criteria rather than guesswork. Post-surgical knees follow the surgeon's protocol with the same discipline.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my knee injury is serious?
Rapid swelling within hours, a pop, inability to bear weight, or true locking all warrant a physician visit and possibly imaging. We can evaluate and refer appropriately if you're unsure where to start.
My injury was months ago — is it too late for PT?
Not at all. Chronic weakness and guarding respond to rehab at any point. 'It never felt right after' is one of the most fixable sentences we hear.
When can I go back to sports?
When testing says so: strength within ~90% of the other side, confident hopping and cutting, and sport-specific drills without reaction. Criteria beat calendars.
