Achilles Tendonitis
Physical therapy for achilles tendonitis at Total Body Rehab — evaluation-driven, one-on-one care in Trenton, serving all of Downriver.
The Achilles is the body's strongest tendon, transferring calf power into every step, run, and jump. Overload it — a training spike, new shoes, more hills — and it responds with the aching stiffness of tendinopathy.
Achilles rehab is one of physical therapy's best-studied successes: progressive loading protocols resolve the majority of cases.
Common signs & symptoms
- Aching or burning above the heel
- Morning stiffness in the first steps
- Pain at the start of a run that eases, then returns after
- Tenderness or thickening of the tendon
- Weak, painful push-off
How physical therapy helps
Treatment centers on progressive calf loading — from isometrics through heavy slow resistance to spring-like plyometric work — dosed by the tendon's response. We manage your training load rather than shutting you down, address calf strength and ankle mobility deficits, and use soft-tissue work and dry needling to support the process.
Treatments we use
- Progressive calf loading
- Heavy slow resistance
- Load management
- Dry needling
- Return-to-run progression
Frequently asked questions
Can I run through Achilles pain?
Often, within limits — mild pain that settles within 24 hours is generally acceptable during rehab. The tendon's morning stiffness is our gauge; we adjust your plan by it weekly.
Should I worry about rupture?
Tendinopathy raises risk modestly, which is one more reason to rehab it properly. Sudden sharp pain with a pop and inability to push off is an emergency — but gradual aching is a rehab problem, not a rupture warning.
Why do my new shoes matter?
Big changes in heel drop alter Achilles load abruptly. We'll check your footwear history — sometimes the fix starts there.
